Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), known for its commendable solvent resistance, stability, and low friction, is a leading fluoroplastic with unmatched performance. Fluorochemical manufacturers usually offer three types: Suspension Resin, Dispersion Resin, and Dispersion Liquid.
PTFE originates from polymerizing monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). The industrial polymerization processes of TFE are crucially categorized into Suspension and Dispersion Polymerization. Suspension polymerization results in Suspension PTFE Resin while Dispersion Polymerization yields Dispersion PTFE Resin and PTFE Dispersion.
During both processes, an aqueous phase is employed as the medium, utilizing water-soluble persulfate, peroxide, or an oxidation-reduction system as initiators. Initiators are introduced into the aqueous solution in a sealed reactor with oxygen drainage, gradually filled with TFE monomer. The dissolved TFE initiates polymerization in the aqueous phase. Since PTFE isn't water-soluble, the resulting polymerization product precipitates as primary particles from water. In the absence of dispersants in the water, these primary particles aggregate into coarse particles—known as Suspension Polymerization. Conversely, if a dispersant (like perfluorooctanoate) is introduced at a concentration below the critical micelle concentration, primary particles are protected, resulting in a temporarily stable dispersion or Dispersion Polymerization.
Products of Suspension Polymerization
Medium-Grained Resin (100-180μm): With limited flowability, it's ideal for molding simple shapes.
Fine-Grained Resin (20-40μm): Softer due to its smaller size, it’s used for products with enhanced mechanical properties.
Pelletized Resin: Exhibiting great flowability, it's suitable for automatic molding and diverse products.
Presintered Resin: Processed at over 300℃, this variant is perfect for crafting thin-walled and small-diameter products.
PTFE Concentrated Dispersion Liquid: It can be directly applied, predominantly consisting of primary particles ranging from 0.05 to 0.5 μm.
Dispersed Resin: This powdery resin has an average particle size of about 450μm, proving essential for impregnating materials.
Dispersed PTFE is shear-sensitive, especially above 19℃. During production preparation, minimize shear effects and store at lower temperatures for optimal results.
PTFE products are indispensable in various industries, utilized in making gaskets, valves, pipes, linings, insulators, tapes, and more, responding to the growing need for resilient and versatile materials.
